The park was Ahmanson Ranch, now named the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve. (Don’t get me started on why a public park agency, in this case, the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy (SMMC), would take a simple name for a place, known by all, and give it a name I don’t think anyone can remember! I have to look it up every time I write about it. Why not at least remove either the “Open Space” part of the title, or “Preserve?”)
Anyway, the walk was part of a tour of the park for Margot Feuer, one of our national park cofounders, conducted by Rorie Skei of the SMMC in April, 2009. I was thrilled to be able to go along!
I did not live in the Conejo Valley during the campaign to make Jordan Ranch a part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, but I was here and took part in the fight to save Ahmanson Ranch.

Being part of saving the mountains is something I will always be proud of. Margot has always been an inspiration
