Will Environment and Water Issues Be Represented by the New VC Star Editorial Board?

August 12th, 2012 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

The Sunday (8-12) Ventura County Star announced their new editorial advisory board, consisting of 5 individuals from the county.  Congratulations to board members Carisa Iezza of Thousand Oaks, Arcenio Lopez of Oxnard, Elaine Freeman of Simi Valley, James Christiansen of Ojai, and Rabbi Michael Lotker of Camarillo!

As you can see, there are 2 women and 3 men on the advisory body, with cities throughout Ventura County represented.  Work and community involvement cover areas of education, community outreach and empowerment for a minority group, construction industry, business in general, parks and recreation, law, arts, alternative energy and religion, with one board member holding an elected position.

What I don’t see is a board member to speak for open space and wilderness parks.  That is a cause which is hugely important to so many Ventura County residents, especially since we have 2 national parks hereSanta Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), as well as the Channel Islands National Park I also don’t see someone who appears to have knowledge about water issues, which is important to all in the county, from residents concerned about drinking water supply, to farmers needing water for their crops, to outdoor enthusiasts wanting streams restored.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that the environment will be represented in future editorials and guest opinion at the VC Star.

Janna, I am unsure as to what your basis is for the following; “…I don’t see is a board member to speak for open space and wilderness.”
Are you that familiar with the board members respective backgrounds to make said statement? If what you state is accurate; perhaps we should ask the Star to expand the board by two more members as there is no one from Ventura [which is really odd since the City of Ventura is one of the most populous cities] and or Filmore/Santa Paula.
