I was happy to see workers installing new glass doors on Brookside School’s classrooms this summer, along with windows beside and above the doors.
This is because I came across a study some years ago that made the case for natural light in schools improving kids’ test scores, and that made sense to me. I can remember gazing out school windows as I was growing up, and I think that break in concentration actually aided me in getting back to work on my studies.
So, kudos to OPUSD for adding the windows! Now, how about some more, especially in the portable classrooms? Then, we could compare test scores before and after, and see if more natural light brought the scores even higher! An article says that a school in Seattle is happy with more light. And, a New York Times article writes on the benefits of “daylighting.”
