Contrails Abounded in the Conejo Valley Last Week

October 7th, 2012 · 1 Comment · Uncategorized

Looking up for quite a few days last week in the Conejo Valley, contrails laced the sky.  I like to think of them as sky highways, showing where planes have flown us, and they do a lot where we live.

When I used to fly from the San Francisco Bay area to LAX, the flight path was almost over my home in Oak Park, continuing on to Malibu and then taking a southward turn to Los Angeles.  Now, I fly Burbank from northern California, and the usual route is to turn south over Simi Valley and fly on into the San Fernando Valley.  I can still see the Conejo, but it is a little further away.

Our mornings last week, often started out foggy and overcast, with even some slight precipitation one morning.  I wonder if it the more moist atmosphere that leads to the abundance of contrails…

Like all clouds, contrails are made of water, in the form of a suspension of billions of liquid droplets or ice crystals.

Depending on the temperature and humidity at the altitude the contrail forms, they may be visible for only a few seconds or minutes. Persistent contrails are thought to have a significant effect on global climate
