I would describe the Ventura County Board of Supervisors meeting in Oak Park this evening,  as very special, even sweet.Â
It felt like a small town, friendly gathering, even if the Supervisors (all of whom attended) were seated at a long table on risers. A lot of county staff was present in the audience, but I would say that most attending the meeting were from Oak Park. And, this was a time when the Supervisors and staff got to know this unincorporated community of approximately 15,000 a little better.Â
Speakers got to talk about the various agencies that serve the area. First, Mike Paule, Chair of the O.P. MAC, spoke, suggesting that the Supes brought the rain, and we should have asked them to the community sooner! Then, there was Mike Green of the MAC, representing the Rancho Simi Parks and Recreation District, and Jan Iceland, Chair of the OPUSD board, talking about a national grant the district received to teach a Chinese language (not sure which one.)  I spoke for Triunfo Sanitation as well, and Diane Starzak spoke for the CERTS organization.
The most moving part of the evening was when Supervisor Linda Parks presented a tribute to the parents of Pfc Brian Wolverton of Oak Park, who died serving his country in Afghanistan in August of this year. Brian was a 2006 graduate of Oak Park High School, who attained his A.A. degree from Moorpark College. He returned to Oak Park High School in 2008 to help coach hurdlers in the track program.
It really brought home the cost of the ongoing war, and made it personal. My sympathy,  goes out to the Wolvertons, and I am sure that it was the same for everyone present at the meeting.
Thanks again, Linda, for bringing the Supervisors to our Valley.
