Drew Fountaine, a dedicated hiker of the Santa Monicas, wrote the following as a comment to the previous post, Halloween Land. I am posting it separately because it raises two other issues:
“I was by King Gillette yesterday morning and thought it looked pretty unusual for that area. I am now aware of three things in that region that, cumulatively, are beginning to be of concern. 1. The potential for an RV park at the intersection of Cornell and Mulholland 2. The potential hazardous waste collection site at the southern tip of Calabasas on Malibu Canyon on Las Virgenes/Triunfo property 3. The “Halloween” whateveritis at Mulholland and Malibu Canyon. As I become more intimately familiar with the Santa Monicas (I hike extensively), I am realizing the jewel they are. But these little bits and pieces will add up and change the pristine feel of the region if we aren’t vigilant.”

That Halloween Hay ride thing is a real eye sore. What is it doing on that property?

It’s pretty obvious there is a concerted effort to commercialize the Santa Monica Mountains, in response to the state’s budget woes. According to a listing on CraigsList.org, you will be able to test drive a Subaru at Malibu Creek State Park next Saturday!
