Continuing with this week’s theme of what I like (or don’t) about living in the Conejo Valley, I am happy that Ahmanson Ranch is now parkland for us all to enjoy. The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy bought the land from Washington Mutual in the fall of 2003 and gave it a new name. It is a mouthful! It is now the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon Open Space Preserve! (I think I know why everyone still calls it Ahmanson Ranch…) There are wonderful hiking and biking trails to explore in this 2,650-acre park at the east end of the Conejo.
One major entrace to the park is at the north end of Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas, and another is at the west end of Victory Boulevard in the West Hills. It you are really intrepid, you can also start at the Palo Camado Canyon trailhead on Doubletree Road in Oak Park. Going through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), and connecting into Ahmanson through various trails, you can arrive at the Victory Boulevard entrance. The Conejo Post’s hiking friend, Bob Coutts, has done that, but it is not recommended for the faint of heart or muscle! For more on the park, go to: http://www.lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=28
