Sometimes I just like to read a story about someone who sounds like a genuinely nice guy, who is doing some good in the world. It sounds like Jerry West, former general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers and outstanding Laker and UCLA player, is one such person.
One of my kids had the good fortune to have his wife as a teacher in the early 1970′s at UCLA’s lab school, UES. Mrs. West was pretty and vivacious, as she would meet parents at the school room door, picking up their kids. That Jerry West, who was well known even then, was married to someone that nice and down-to-earth, who cared about children, impressed me.
Anyway, there is an article in today’s (1-31-10) Daily News, about Jerry West leading the PGA Northern Trust Open tournament, and it is great reading. Here is the link to the story by Jill Painter: http://www.dailynews.com/sports/ci_14304479
