On my walk, about 8 AM this morning, I watched two boys, looking around ten years old, run across a school cross walk on Conifer Street, to get to Brookside School. This cross walk always makes me nervous, because a lot of drivers in mostly SUV’s and some cars, roll down Conifer Street toward the intersection at Kanan Road, after dropping off students at the front of the school on Satinwood Street. Often, these vehicles are going pretty fast.
It makes me very concerned to watch young students stand on the curb at this poorly marked Conifer Street cross walk, trying to judge when it is safe to get across the street to their school! While approaching the crossing area, I so hope the young kids have enough judgement to somewhat estimate how fast vehicles are going, and so hope that the drivers approaching the cross walk will be paying attention!
Anyway, it was this concern that led me to inspect the permanent crossing sign a few months ago (see photo), which is at a cross walk in front of an elementary school in Mountain View, California. The sign is heavy duty, and bolted to the street. It is very hard for drivers to ignore. I think we need some in the Conejo Valley.

The OP residents would probably run the sign down in a matter of days. If you need proof, take a look at the permanent cones on the raised center divider in front of the middle school.
