There it is, big and bold on the Sunday Ventura Star Opinion page - “For Supervisor: Linda Parks.”
Fantastic! I was beginning to think that The Star was not going to make an endorsement in the hotly contested race for Ventura CountySupervisor for the second district that serves the Conejo, but they came through after all! I presumed that they would endorse last Sunday, if they were going to, because of the high percentage of absentee voting, with some of those votes cast already.
Way to go, Star!

After receiving a stack of political fliers in the mail I was surprised to see the number of candidates opposing unions. This appears to span across the political spectrum.
I think it is time to remind these so-called representatives that it was the process of bargaining collectively that gave us a 40 hour work week, non-mandatory overtime, a living wage, safer working conditions, paid holidays, medical insurance, and numerous other benefits that we take for granted and are actually slipping away. I have observed it is the Nurses’ Union that fights for safer patient to staffing ratios. Our representative remain mute on this issue. In fact, the candidate as a whole do not appear to grasp the importance of these issues. They appear to not even be able to articulate how local programs can support and defend the middle class. This lack of understanding in the end actually supports the need to unionize.
I think the campaigns have become a battle ideology rather than a discussion to problems brought on by a deep recession. So, for the first time in 22 years of living and working in Ventura County , I will hold my nose when I vote for the least objectionable candidate. And my final message to whoever is elected is: If you don’t support unions that what specific programs do you propose would protect the middle class worker in Ventura County?
