Passion for Pastels Exhibit in Thousand Oaks

July 3rd, 2010 · No Comments · California, Conejo Valley, Media, Newbury Park

I dropped by the Thousand Oaks City Gallery in Newbury Park this afternoon to visit the new show by the Pastel Society of the Gold Coast, and I was impressed.

First of all, the word, “pastel,” makes it sound as if the art works would be in pastel colors and sort of wimpy.  Not at all!  The colors are so vibrant…they really seem almost to glow.  The entries in the show were outstanding, and while ribbons were awarded by a judge, I will bet she had a very hard time in choosing the winners.  I had my own favorites, of course, which were different from the judge’s and I found that thought-provoking.  It made me ask myself why I liked the works I did, and what contributed to the judge’s decisions.

The host-artist pictured above with a work in progress, was Mike Bauer of www.rmartstudios.com.  He helped me with my purchase of some beautiful cards, featuring art from members of the group, which I am going to frame.  I think it is such a lovely and inexpensive way to display local art, so now I will have mini-pieces by Rita Rie, Emily Goldfield, and Sydney Kopeikin.  Hmmm…maybe one day I will have a show in my home of all my card art!

But, to see the real thing, go to the T.O. Ciyt Gallery from July 2 to 30, next to the Newbury Park Library, on Tues - Sun, from 11 AM to 5 PM.  Incidentally, the reception is next Sunday (7-11), but more on that later.  To view art work on the group’s website, go to:  http://www.pastelsocietyofthegoldcoast.org/gallery.html
