A story from Palo Alto in this morning’s Daily News (7-6) talks about the dangers of texting while walking, and the apps that tech companies are coming up with, to keep people safe from themselves.
The Daily News article reported that, in 2008, over 1,000 pedestrians showed up in emergency rooms with injuries that happened while they were distracted by texting. The injuries included walking into poles and spraining ankles from falling.
Some of the apps mentioned in the article were see-through screens, having a camera in the phone put an image on the screen, of what is ahead of the user. I’ve got another idea, that comes from dodging oblivious texters on sidewalks in the Silicon Valley while I have been on vacation…stop texting while walking! I know that doesn’t have much chance of catching on, but a non-texter can wish!
The good news is that I have not had to get out of the way of walking texters here in the Conejo Valley, yet. Maybe we just don’t have the population concentration to make it a problem. Anyway, to read the Daily News 7-6 article: http://www.dailynews.com/breakingnews/ci_15443135
