Is the Conejo Valley going to have only one large bookstore, starting next year? I hope not, but the 7-14 article in the VC Star about the Thousand Oaks Borders closing in January, 2011, was not encouraging. The Star reported that, in February, a variety of Ventura County clinics will be moving in to the building now housing Borders Bookstore. The VC Supervisors approved the clinics’ location in the 40,000 square foot space at their 7-13 board meeting.
Building owner, Larry Janss, said that Borders had not negotiated a new lease, and a Borders spokesperson said the bookstore is now considering other location options, according to the Star article.
I am glad that more Ventura County clinic space is coming to the Conejo, but saddened by the upcoming closing of Borders at its current location. I have spent many good hours there, looking for books, magazines and CDs (and buying them), and hanging out in the coffee shop. This is indeed very sad. I take it the clinics they speak of are medical ones. Let us hope they are NOT affiliated with the company that owns the for-profit hospital. Let’s encourage good old fashioned competition. It seems health care provision suffers without it.
