When I fly north out of either LAX or BUR, I look out my plane window for the State Water Project canal, bringing Sacramento Delta water to thirsty SoCal. I finally realized I could take a photo from the airplane, and here it is! The air intake for the jet is on the right, and the canal goes diagonally from that up to the left.
I find it amazing that this is how we get most or all of our drinking water in the Conejo Valley. What engineering! However, it would be beneficial for our water supply to also have a way around the Delta instead of just through it, like a peripheral canal and also have more reservoirs for storing it. We were going to be voting this November on a $11.1 billion bond issue to cover huge water legislation that might pave the way for these improvements to happen.
However, according to an 8-11 article in the Sacramento Bee, opposition was growing from some environmental groups as well as anti-tax groups. Last Monday, 8-9, the California Senate and Assembly voted for a two year delay on placing the water bonds on the ballot. Will financing a possible solution to our state water supply challenges be any easier to tackle in two years? I doubt it!
