You could say I am addicted to newspapers. First thing in the morning, I dash out to the driveway to pick up my papers, which include The VC Star, Daily News, L.A. Times from Thursday to Sunday, and the Financial Times. Writing the Conejo Post has happily given me an excuse to subscribe to them all!
On Monday, I saw an ad campaign in the Daily News that I like a lot. It features the photos of five columnists, and the ad is titled, ”Local and Vocal.” The featured columnists are Dennis McCarthy, billed as “everyone’s hometown favorite;” Rick Orlov, reporting on City Hall; Doug McIntyre, who has been making tough comments about the state of the Valley and L.A.; and two new regular columnists, Kerry Cavanaugh, who will investigate local government; and Al Martinez, who is described as a “Pulitzer-prize winning essayist and columnist.”
I like this approach to news and reporting because I think it is bringing in one of the best elements of blogs to a print newspaper. It is putting faces and personalities to columns that will report news, but will probably have opinions and color as well. And, at least some, if not all the columnists will be on the front page! Martinez introduced himself yesterday on the front page, as did Kerry Cavanaugh today.
Way to go, Daily News! I look forward to reading those columns as I sit down to breakfast!
