Ventura Regional Sanitation District (VRSD) won a technical innovation and achievement award from the California Association of Sanitation Agencies (CASA), August 19 in Monterey. Congratulations to VRSD! A number of other sanitation districts were competing for the recognition.
VRSD won for their new biosolids (sludge) treatment project at the Toland Landfill off of Highway 23 in Santa Paula. The sludge is superheated in the facility to kill all pathogens, and then the resulting pellets are used as alternative daily cover at the landfill. I emailed VRSD general manager, Mark Lawler, and asked him what aspects of the Toland project did he think, were crucial in winning the award. Mark said that he thought the regional aspect was important, because Ventura County sewage agencies now send biosolids to Toland and not out of the county. He also said that there is 100% recycling of water and the biosolids, plus the generation and use of green power from the landfill.
Way to be on the cutting edge of technology, recycling and green power!
