Unusual for the day after Labor Day…we have a misty and gray sky, as the kids head to school on the old traditional starting day. Of course, most students now start back sooner, sometimes by weeks, but today is when my internal alarm clock tells me that it is time for the school year to begin. Above is a photo of a local school crossing, that I took on my morning walk. It is hard to see in the photo, but the crossing is between the far right corner, and the treed area on the left. Vehicles can go quite fast for a residential area in the morning, as they come around the
bend. There is no crossing guard, and I always worry when I see younger elementary school kids peering in both directions, trying to decide when to cross. When I am approaching the crossing, they usually just run across the street when they decide to go.
The second photo, taken in the Silicon Valley, shows a real contrast! A sign is bolted to the street, and in flourescent colors says to yield to pedestrians with the crosswalk. Wow! That sign would catch a driver’s attention! If school districts in the Conejo Valley don’t want to install this sign or a similar one, how about placing those round, white bumps that go in the street, or suspend a lighted sign over the street that says, “Pedestrian Crossing,” or even install a button activated stop light for the children to use. Let’s do something to make our Conejo Valley kids safer!

We live in a very protective environment. Which is actually why I love it here. Overall it is pleasant that our children can walk to and from school without worries. What concerns me is, (this includes all age groups) the kids don’t look both ways before crossing. Basic safety is lost here. So, as a parent, please teach your kids to look both ways before crossing the street. Even if you have the light, have them check for cars.
