This is from Marie Panec, Board Member of the Oak Park Unified School District:
I agree with the concern of students running in the heat. When I first joined the Oak Park school board, students were not allowed to wear hats during PE. Allowing and encouraging PE students to wear hats, carry water, and wear sunscreen were amongst the first things that I advocated for in the district’s PE programs.
In checking with the Oak Park High School principal, it appears that the runners seen in the mid-afternoon heat on Sept. 3 were not Oak Park High students. Kevin Buchanan (principal) writes,
“None of our athletic teams begin practice until 3:30. Cross Country is in season now and wouldn’t start running until around 3:45 or 4 pm after stretching and pre-practice.
None of our PE classes run off campus and students have easy access to hydration on the track. Students are instructed to hydrate the day before, during, and after runs.”
