Is It Cheeseboro or Chesebro, or Something in Between?

August 11th, 2009 · 3 Comments · Agoura Hills, Conejo Valley, Outdoors

I admit to being confused about how to spell the street in Agoura Hills, that leads to the canyon, that I am confused about how to spell, in the National Recreation Area.

I finally had to look at a map and found that there are two spellings…one for the road and one for the canyon!  No wonder I was confused, and I’ll bet some of you were too.

The road in Agoura Hills that has 101 Freeway on and off ramps, is spelled Chesebro.  The canyon in the National Park with the popular hiking trail is spelled Cheeseboro.  It is like someone abbreviated the spelling of the Canyon name and used that for the road name.

I hope this is perfectly clear now, and that, with my new information,  I have corrected all my misspellings in the Conejo Post,  including the one under the photo of the oaks (when I figure out how to fix that.)

I’m glad to see that someone else has noticed that the canyon has a different spelling. I have to get out a map for some of the newer residents when I call it Cheesebro. Which leads to the pronunciation. Seems to me that it was ‘Cheese’ bro in the day. Both street and canyon. But I’m dating myself here. It wasn’t until the fancy pants Morrison Ranch development moved in that people started pronouncing it ‘Chez’ bro.

I have been corrected each way I have said or spelled this. I have resolved not knowing the right way to spell or pronounce this canyon has been part of the charm of living in the area for the last 22 years.

We can’t even spell Agoure correctly, let alone Cheeseborough
