Woody Smeck was presented with the Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation’s Citizen of the Year award Friday evening (5-20) at the Federation’s annual banquest at the Malibou Lake Mountain Club.
Woody is the much-loved and respected Superintendent of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA), which is the Conejo Valley’s very own National Park.
The photo shows Kim Lamorie, President of the LVHF, talking of Woody’s achievements and presenting him with a gift. Other speakers giving tribute to his calm and innovative leadership style were L.A. County Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky, State Senator Fran Pavley, and Assemblymember, Julia Brownley. Representing park agencies were Joe Edmiston, head of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy; Craig Sap, Superintendent of L.A. area California State Parks; Melanie Beck from NPS, and speakers from the Mountains Restoration Trust, and the Resource Conservation District of the Santa Monica Mountains. Mayors and/or council people from Agoura Hills, Calabasas, and Malibu added their compliments, and Margot Feuer and Cynthia Maxwell of Save Open Space presented him with the SOS eagle award.
It was quite an evening! Congratulations, Woody! Here are 2 links of interest: http://www.nps.gov/samo/parkmgmt/index.htm, and http://www.lvhf.org/

It was a very touching tribute to a remarkably talented and accomplished man. His stamp will forever be reflected in what he has protected for us and our grandchildren. The respect and admiration he is held in, by some pretty impressive people, is awsome.
